🔹Global Handwashing Day is a campaign to encourage people around the world to wash their hands with soap.
🔹It takes place on October 15 of each year. The campaign's goal is to raise awareness of handwashing with soap as a key way to prevent diseases.
🔹The holiday was made at the annual World Water Week 2008, which was held in Stockholm from August 17 to 23. Out of this week came the Public Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW).
🔹The Global Handwashing Day took place for the first time on October 15, 2008, the date appointed by United Nations General Assembly to go along with the year 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation.
🔹The theme for Global Handwashing Day’s inaugural year was Focus on School Children. The members pledged to get the maximum number of school children handwashing with soap in more than seventy countries.
🔹Importance of handwashing
🔹Handwashing ▪ Hand washing with soap is extremely effective and the most inexpensive way to prevent diarrhea and acute respiratory infections (ARI).
🔹Pneumonia, a major ARI, is the number one cause of mortality among children under five years old, taking the life of an estimated 1.8 million children per year. Diarrhea and pneumonia together account for almost 3.5 million child deaths annually.
🔹Handwashing with soap is estimated to reduce incidents of diarrhea by 30% and respiratory infections by 21% in children under the age of five.
🔹It is important to turn handwashing into a habit. According to the official site, turning hand washing with soap before eating and after using the toilet into an ingrained habit was projected to save more lives than any single vaccine or medical intervention, cutting deaths from diarrhea by almost half and deaths from acute respiratory infections by one-quarter.
🔹Handwashing is usually integrated together with other sanitation interventions as part of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes.
🔹GHD helps raise awareness of the importance of washing with soap, but it also makes it fun for children to get involved.
🔹Handwashing with soap may seem like a simple behavior, but it is rarely practiced globally. This is due both in part to lack of resources as well as it not being a habit.
🔹Peer influence is significant to seeing increased handwashing among students. In a study conducted in Kenya, researchers found that students were significantly more likely to wash their hands when another student is present.
🔹Peer influence is only successful, however, when students know that handwashing is a desirable action.

ఓసారి మీ అరచేతుల కేసి చూసుకోండి. అవి శుభ్రంగానే కనిపించవచ్చు. కానీ వాటి మీద కోటానుకోట్ల సూక్ష్మజీవులు ఉన్నాయని ఊహించగలరా? నీళ్లతో చేతులు కడుక్కున్నా అవి పోవు. సబ్బుతోకానీ, హ్యాండ్వాష్ ద్రావకంతో కానీ దాదాపు 20 సెకన్లు కడుక్కుంటేనే మీ చేతులు శుభ్రంగా ఉన్నట్టు. ప్రతి రోజూ భోజనం చేయడానికి ముందు, మలవిసర్జనకు వెళ్లొచ్చిన తర్వాత ఇలా చేతుల్ని శుభ్రపరుచుకోవడం మనల్ని ఎన్నో అనారోగ్యాల బారి నుంచి రక్షిస్తుంది.
చేతులు కడుక్కోకుండా ఉండడం వల్ల ఎన్ని రోగాలు దాడి చేసే అవకాశం ఉందో తెలుసా? రెండు వందలకు పైనే! ఆ రోగాల్ని కలిగించే సూక్ష్మజీవులు ఉండేది అరచేతుల్లోనే మరి.
ఏటా ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా 35 లక్షల మంది చిన్నారులు డయేరియా, నిమోనియా లాంటి రోగాల వల్ల మరణిస్తున్నారు. వీటిని నివారించడానికే ఈ కార్యక్రమం.
ఓ అంతర్జాతీయ సర్వే ప్రకారం మన దేశంలో కేవలం 44 శాతం మంది మాత్రమే చేతుల శుభ్రత పాటిస్తున్నారని తేలింది.
ఈ రోజు దేశదేశాల్లో ఎన్ని కార్యక్రమాలో! ఆస్ట్రేలియాలో చేతుల శుభ్రతపై రాసిన పాటని పిల్లలందరూ ఆలపిస్తారు. తజికిస్తాన్లో పిల్లలు బొమ్మలు, పోస్టర్లతో ప్రచారం చేస్తారు. మడగాస్కర్లో సుమారు 35 లక్షల మంది బాలలు కలిసి ఒకేసారి సబ్బుతో చేతులు కడుక్కుంటారు. ఈ కార్యక్రమంలో ఆ దేశ అధ్యక్షుడు కూడా పాల్గొంటారు. దక్షిణాఫ్రికాలో సుమారు 90 లక్షల మంది ఎసెమ్మెస్లను బట్వాడా చేస్తారు.
ప్రపంచబ్యాంకు, యునిసెఫ్ ఆధ్వర్యంలో 'గ్లోబల్ పబ్లిక్-ప్రైవేట్ పార్టనర్ షిప్ ఫర్ హ్యాండ్వాషింగ్' సంస్థ తొలిసారిగా ఈ కార్యక్రమాన్ని 2008లో ప్రారంభించింది.
ప్రస్తుతం అన్ని రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వాలు ప్రాధమిక స్థాయిలోనే పాఠశాలలో ఈ కార్యక్రమంను ఉధృతంగా ప్రచారం చేస్తూ ప్రజలకు అవగాహన కల్పిస్తున్నారు. మనమూ చేతులు కలుపడమా.. కాదు! కాదు!! చేతులు శుభ్రం చేసుకుందాం.
