World Sight Day (WSD) is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment.
2016 is the fourth year of the WHO Global Action Plan and IAPB encourages our members and partners to continue with our rolling theme:

WSD is co-ordinated by IAPB under the VISION 2020 Global Initiative.
The theme, and certain core materials are generated by IAPB. All events are organised independently by members and supporter organisations.
World Sight Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of October, is a global event meant to draw attention on blindness and vision impairment. It was originally initiated by the SightFirstCampaign of Lions Club International Foundation in 2000.
It has since been integrated into VISION 2020 and is coordinated by IAPB in cooperation with the World Health Organization.
The theme for World Sight Day 2016 to be held on October 13, 2016 - is "Stronger together..
It takes place on the second Thursday in October.

International Key Messages
Approximately 285 million people worldwide live with low vision and blindness
Of these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment
90% of blind people live in low-income countries
Yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable - i.e. readily treatable and/or preventable
Restorations of sight, and blindness prevention strategies are among the most cost-effective interventions in health care
The number of people blind from infectious causes has greatly reduced in the past 20 years
An estimated 19 million children are visually impaired
About 65 % of all people who are visually impaired are aged 50 and older, while this age group comprises only 20% of the world's population
Increasing elderly populations in many countries mean that more people will be at risk of age-related visual impairment.

సర్వేంద్రియాణాం నయనం ప్రధానం అంటారు . కంటిచూపుతో ప్రపంచాన్ని చుట్టేయవచ్చు . కనుసన్నల్తో ఆ ప్రపంచం లో బతికేయవచ్చు . అదే చూపు లోపిస్తే అంతా అంధకారమే . జీవితం చీకటిమయం అయిపోతుంది . రంగుల ప్రపంచము సుదూరతీరాలకు వెళ్ళిపోతుంది . ఆ కటిక చీకటిలో ఆ తీరము ఎప్పటికీ అందకుండానే మిగిలిపోతుంది. అందుకే ఆ చూపును ఎప్పుడూ పదిలం గా కాపాడుకోవాలి .
అంధత్వము అంటే పూర్తిగా గాని పాక్షికం గా గాని చూడలేని స్థితి. కంటి చూపు (Vision) పోవడాన్ని గుడ్డితనం లేదా అంధత్వం (Blindness) అంటారు.
ఇది నేత్ర సంబంధమైన లేదా నరాల సంబంధమైన కారణాల వలన కలుగవచ్చును.
